This fabulous Suzani adds a wonderful exotic touch to a room when used as a throw on a bed or sofa. It would also look fabulous on a large headboard or ottoman. These Tajik Suzanis were usually used as wall hangings.
The vintage Suzani has a look typical of mid-twentieth-century Tajik embroideries - bold, flat patterns in a limited palette on black. The distinctive white border pattern is said to symbolise a snake, which was thought to protect against evil spirits. It is bordered by an intricately machine-embroidered black cotton trim and has navy fringing on one side.
